Why Only 4H and 1D? How Fees Eat Short Timeframes

5 min read · Updated October 2026

Short timeframes look exciting. The fees quietly eat them. Every trade on Binance Spot costs about 0.1% to buy and 0.1% to sell — roughly 0.2% for the round trip. That sounds tiny, but on a 5-minute or 1-hour chart a sensible Stop Loss is only a few tenths of a percent away, so the fee becomes a big slice of what you risk on every single trade.

Key takeaways

  • Fees are a fixed % of the position; your risk is the distance to your Stop Loss.
  • On short charts the stop is tight, so fees can equal half your risk — or more.
  • On 4H fees are about a fifth of the risk; on 1D about a twentieth.
  • That is why SetupVerdict analyzes only 4H and 1D.

The numbers on Bitcoin

Same $1,000 trade on Bitcoin, Stop Loss at 1.5× the typical candle move, target 2× the risk:

What that means in dollars

On a 1-hour chart you risk $3.94 and pay $2.00 in fees — half your risk is gone whatever the market does. On a daily chart you risk $38.02 and pay the same $2.00. To come out even with a 2:1 target, the 1-hour trader has to win about half of their trades; the daily trader needs about one in three.

On 5 minutes it gets worse than unfair: the fees are larger than the risk itself, so you would need to win more than 9 trades out of 10 just to stand still. Good analysis cannot overcome that.

We tested it before deciding

We replayed the SetupVerdict engine candle by candle on 10 major Binance pairs, with fees included. On 1H the setups were roughly break-even before fees and lost money after fees, whatever rules we tried. On 4H and 1D the fees took a far smaller bite. So 1H was removed.

We would rather show fewer setups than hand beginners a chart where the odds are stacked against them before they even start.

What this means for you

How the numbers were calculated

Typical move per candle = Bitcoin's average true range (ATR 14) measured on Binance on 12 Oct 2026 for 1H (0.26%), 4H (0.69%) and 1D (2.54%); 5m and 15m are estimated from the 1H value. Stop distance = 1.5 × ATR. Fees: Binance standard Spot rate of 0.1% per side, before any discounts. Break-even win rate = (1 + fees ÷ risk) ÷ 3 for a 2:1 target. SetupVerdict's targets range from 1.5:1 to 3:1; with a 1.5:1 target the bar is higher — about 48% on 4H, 42% on 1D, 60% on 1H, and on 5 minutes you could not break even at all. Illustration only — numbers change with the coin and the market, and none of this is a promise of profit.

Put the rules on autopilot

SetupVerdict checks trend, momentum, location, trend strength and risk on 4H and 1D candles, then gives you one verdict with Entry, Stop Loss, Take Profit and a position-size calculator. The free tool needs only a free account — no card required.

Educational content only — not financial advice. Crypto-assets are volatile and you can lose money, including all of it. Examples are illustrative and use round numbers; real results depend on prices, fees and your own decisions.
